I think downtime during the summer months is really important for kids but I’ve also seen what happens when they don’t pick up a pencil for a few months ( yikes!) It can be a rude awaking when they head back to school so I’m always looking for fun ways to encourage them to write a little throughout the summer. Summer travel is the perfect opportunity to inspire kids to do a little writing not to mention record some great memories! Since we’re heading out on a big road trip this summer, I thought I would include some travel journal pages in our Road Trip Binder (which already has 40+ Free Printable Road Trip Activities you might want to check out!) This could double as a scrapbook and include lined / plain paper for both writing and drawing.Use these travel journal ideas & free printable pages to help kids document their next vacation or trip! That being said, there’s no reason you couldn’t find a lovely notebook to use instead. We went for the more structured approach as I thought it would be too hard for the Things to organise their thoughts. space for autographs from all the characters. There’s an area to rate the rides as well as a “passport” to get stamped while visiting the world showcase countries at Epcot scavenger hunts (for the four major parks only) and. It claims to have plenty of writing space including prompts plus areas for drawing pictures. We’ve not had the chance to use the Disney Travel Journal but I love this idea! Rather than it being a journal for a whole trip, it is just for Disney trips. It included prompts such as things to do see and do on a trip, pace for drawing and, things to remember. Not to be confused with Kids’ Travel Journal above! We decided that this Kids Travel Journal was aimed at kids who are a bit older so we didn’t go for it with our children being a bit smaller. In retrospect, I think it might have been better as it was simpler. We didn’t go for this one as I thought the Things would need more prompts and variety. Although it had fewer activities, it still included prompts such as planning your trip and packing list, writing about what happened on the way there and back (and while there), sketching pages, and an opportunity to rate each day. The Kids’ Travel Journal seemed a bit simpler than the first two. ![]() It has some games and activities as well as journalling prompts to help get the kids started. This is very similar to the Lonely Planet journal, The Ultimate Travel Journal for Kids. It isn’t so much a journal as an activity book but we liked it for the prompts that it had inside. The Lonely Planet’s My Travel Journal was the most recommended journal by friends and fellow travellers/travel bloggers. So I did my research and found the best travel journals for kids. Given they were so little, I knew we would have to write it down or they’d forget everything. I wanted it to be something we could all share in years to come. When it came to taking our kids on a family self-drive safari to Namibia, I was determined that it would be a holiday to remember. Some of them are hastily scribbled down in a spare moment, others are more thoughtfully written over a glass of wine or next to a campfire as I go over the events and activities of the day. Constantly! My writing is actually a collection of notes on my phone, photos of important things or places to remember, screenshots of maps, and scribbles in an old battered notebook. ![]() I write constantly when we are travelling. ![]() I’m often asked for recommendations on the best travel journals for kids. Warzone 2100 (Nostalgia Level 9000 Mode Engaged) ![]() Red Alert 2 (specifically vanilla, I didn't really like the Yuri's Revenge expansion much) Red Alert 1 (all versions but my favorite has always been Retaliation, at the time played on my PS1). Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War - Dark Crusade Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds (I can only wish one day it'll receive an HD remaster like Age of Empires 2 recently got)Īnd the God Tier ones (definitely affected by nostalgia, to be taken with a pretty heavy grain of salt for most I guess, even though I genuinely think they are that good to this day): Command & Conquer 2 a.k.a Tiberian Sun (nostalgia helps a lot for that one, I still enjoy it enough to play it but it is much slower-paced than I'd like it to be nowadays) The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth Ones that I consider among the best RTSes out there, regardless of their age or them being 3D or not: Halo Wars (the 'Definitive Edition' on Steam specifically, never played it elsewhere) Red Alert 3 (absolutely not as bad as some people made it out to be at the time, up to this day it's a solid game even though I did prefer RA2 vanilla) Command & Conquer 3 (particularly liked, and preferred it with the Kane's Wrath expansion) Supreme Commander / Forged Alliance (first one) Ones that I know were good (well, obviously in my opinion), or "decent", albeit some being old(er): Dark Reign (similar to the above, also never played the sequel) Ground Control (never "hated" it, want to make it clear but never thought of it as being as good as a lot of people made it out to be, and I never played the sequel) Ones I considered "okay"'ish, could have been (much) better but not exactly garbage per se (although I stopped playing them long ago): ![]() Ones that I know received 'mixed' reviews and seem to fall in the "hate it or love it" category (and never played myself): Very recent (or relatively recent) ones I heard good things about but never played myself yet: Anyway, just going 'generally-speaking' with the genre itself I can list a couple (some won't fall in your specific category like C&C Generals would, however). ![]() Those types of RTSes are a bit more difficult to find. Even more interesting that you seem to be looking for ones that are in 3D (where you can also move and rotate the camera to some extent). Ah yes, the RTS genre, one of my favorites. |
